LABS: Volume 2 | 2 x 8 minute breathwork sessions with Miles mortensen
Pranayama as referred to in Sanskrit, is translated as taking control, or taking care of the life-force. The term consists of two words Prana - that which is everywhere: the substance that keeps us alive and Ayama - to extend or stretch. If Prana is lacking in the body, we may be lacking in energy, sluggish, unwell and even depressed. The more Prana we have, the more smoothly it flows through the body without obstruction, the more peaceful and balanced we feel. We use Breathwork or Pranayama to help balance this and we will always begin or close a Rocket practice in this way.
-
or Nadi Shodhana
In Sanskrit, Nadi Shodhana translates as “subtle energy clearing breathing technique.” Alternate nostril breathing may help to relax your body and mind, promote overall well-being, reduce anxiety and help increase focus and awareness.
-
Or Kapalbhati
In Sanskirt, Kapal means ‘forehead’ and ‘Bhati’ means ‘shining' and there are many benefits to this pranayama practice. Kapalbhati helps cleanse the lungs and entire respiratory system, increasing a supply of oxygen to cells. Digestion is improved and abdominal muscles are strengthened. It prepares the mind for meditation by drawing attention inwards, and energising the body and mind for mental work.
-
Mula Bandha - Lifting of the muscles above the perineum, anal sphincter and pelvic floor muscles.
Uddiyana Bandha - Area between the diaphragm and pelvic floor, drawing abdominal organs back and up into the body.
Jalandhara Bandha - Throat lock, involved the neck and upper spine.
-
Set the mood - light some candles, burn some incense.
Sit comfortably - make sure your knees are below your hips and if they are not, sit on a block or chair.
Sit up straight and maintain a long spine
Consider energy locks and how you might engage through the practice.
NB Do not practice Kabalbhati if you are in a particularly anxious state or pregnant and have not practiced this technique before.
